The Interesting Argument
The conversation has become fascinating. We are sorting out someone else's choices, discussing who should have done what, and finding plenty to agree about. Meanwhile, a newer member is standing nearby with a cup of coffee and no one to talk to. No one decided to ignore them. Our attention simply found something easier and more entertaining to do.
Distraction does not always announce itself as a grand departure from principle. It can be an absorbing conversation that leaves no attention for the reason we gathered. Recognizing this need not turn every coffee break into a duty. Friendship and laughter belong here too. But it is worth being honest about the particular pleasure of discussing absent people while a present person waits. Our purpose can return through the small discomfort of noticing whom our circle has left outside it.
What has my attention, and who might be missing it?
