Speaking With Some Confidence
We preface every opinion with so many apologies that people struggle to hear what we think. We might be wrong, we say; we are no expert; everyone else probably knows better. This may sound humble. It may also be a way of avoiding the vulnerability of having offered a clear view that others can examine.
Humility need not blur every sentence. We can say what we believe and give the reasons, while staying available to new information. That asks more of us than a ritual disclaimer. If someone finds an error, we will need to respond to it rather than point out that we never claimed certainty. A group benefits from members who contribute their best judgment clearly. Our responsibility includes the courage to be understood. We do not have to become forceful or absolute; we can simply let our considered opinion occupy its ordinary place in the discussion.
What would I say plainly if I trusted myself to accept correction later?
My best understanding is worth offering honestly.
