Still One of Us
Without a service title, introductions can feel strangely unfinished. We used to explain what we did, and people knew where to place us. Now we are simply a member sitting down before the meeting. There may be relief in that, along with an uncomfortable suspicion that we have become less useful or less interesting. We might begin searching for another position before discovering what the empty space allows.
Belonging in A.A. was never earned by holding office. Service may have helped us feel part of the Fellowship, but it did not create a superior kind of membership that expires with the term. We still have a story, a need for help, and something to offer. We can hear a newcomer without being introduced as anyone in particular. Perhaps this quieter season will bring friendships that are no longer organized around asking us to solve a problem.
